punch the air

You know that feeling when you get so excited that you just have to punch the air? We do! We entered Three of Strong Spirit’s 2nd Anniversary Rum Punch contest with this one and we won! Air punches all around.

We started with our Falcon Punch and took it to another level. The contest was to create a rum punch using Three of Strong Spirits products that was based on the rhyme their name comes from:

“1 of sour, 2 of sweet, 3 of strong, 4 of weak.”

So we went with:

SOUR

1 oz lime juice

SWEET

1 oz pineapple juice

1 oz cherry syrup

STRONG

WEAK

.5 oz Citrus liqueur (we make our own, instructions below, but store bought is great!)

.5 oz Watermelon liqueur (see above, and then below)

.5 oz Velvet Falernum

.5 oz Cynar

Put all of the ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake and dump into a whole pineapple. Garnish ostentatiously. Serves 2, or one if you’re in vaca mode.

HOMEMADE LIQUEUR

Making your own liqueurs is super easy! It takes a while, but is very low effort.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Fruit of choice

Vodka - cheap is fine. As long as it’s a minimum of 80 proof, you’re good

A jar with a lid that you can seal air tight

Patience

Simple Syrup

WHAT TO DO

Cut up the fruit you want to use and put into your jar. Pour enough vodka in so the fruit is totally covered and not exposed to air. Seal the jar up and let it sit somewhere out of direct sunlight for 4-6 weeks. Fruits with stronger flavors we let go for four weeks (berries etc) and milder fruit like melons we’ll let go for six. Experiment!

You can give your jars a shake and rotate every so often to make sure all of the fruit is covered by liquid. After a few days when things settle, you may need to add a splash more.

After the time is up, strain the fruit out and measure how much mega-infused vodka you have. Mix it with simple syrup in a 1:1 ratio (ex. If you have 12 ounces of fruity vodka after you strain, mix with 12 ounces of simple syrup).

That’s it! If you want to make sure your liqueur is as clear as can be and get as many solids out as you can for clearer cocktails, run the mix through a coffee filter. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Not necessary to keep it in the fridge, but if you won’t go through it in a few weeks, it will help it last!
